Update From Potty World

03 Sep

Have you been checking the site every day to see how things are going, and getting frustrated by the lack of news? {Right}  Well, here’s the scoop.

We did NOT give up after that first trying week.  Happily, that weekend seemed to be a turning point.  At the time, I was skeptical about the whole thing as well as concerned that we were just asking for another week of misery and messiness in spite of a couple of good days.  I’m so happy I was wrong!!

First of all, remember the princess potty seat that she LOVES and demanded to sit on at first?  She just had all kinds of problems relaxing enough to actually go when she was sitting on it on the “big potty,” even though we had a stool set up to support her feet.  She quickly got the hang of “holding it,” but when she sat down to go, nothing would come out.  We finally convinced her to try her little potty chair.  Our saving grace.

For whatever reason (because her feet touch the floor and her posture is more appropriate? psychological? magical? WHO CARES!) she immediately relaxed, and VOILA!  Sweet success.  She now goes on her Baby Bjorn potty every time, and for the last six days, we’ve had no accidents.  NONE!!  That means she was completely trained in about a week and half to two weeks.  Yay!  She’s even dry after naps and overnight, which we NEVER expected since she’s on her feeding pump both of those times with mega fluid being pumped into her little system.  Amazing.

We’ve gone out to eat a couple times, and dressed her in a pull-up “just-in-case.”  She told us that she needed to go at the restaurant, but would have absolutely nothing to do with the toilets there.  She looked around and said, “But where is MY potty, Mommy?”  We totally expected an accident to result, but the little trooper held it until we got home and got her on her own potty.  We’ve had a couple of outings since then, and decided to take her potty along.  We simply set it up on top of a towel in the back end of our Honda CRV and lined the bowl with a plastic bag for super-easy waste disposal.  Worked wonderfully.

Now, our little potty-pro holds it for long periods of time, and then goes immediately when she sits down on the potty.  Hooray for Jenna!!  She’s still all about the prizes, so we’re going to work toward phasing those out or we’re going to go broke.  We also added in a monetary award.  She has a giraffe bank that her grandpa made, and she loves to “feed” it quarters and watch them travel to its “stomach.”  We’re running low on quarters, but decided to simply break into the bank and recirculate the ones she already won.  She’ll never know the difference.  Unless someday when she’s grown she reads this blog with outrage and demands her “fair” reward.  Ha!

So, potty training has successfully been accomplished and I’m already dreaming of what we can do with the money we’ll save on diapers each month.  I think I deserve a small prize for my role in the whole process, don’t you?? {Wink}

    You definitely deserve a reward. Is there a special animal-shaped bank you would like to have for your very own?

    You have inspired me to write a ferw potty stories from my kids’ experiences. Maybe after all the convention coverage I’ve commited to lampooning…

    Adding to my Wal-m@rt list…a Baby Bjorn potty…but I bet I’ll have to get that at Babies-R-Us! Sounds like a magical potty!
