Having a cow

23 Jul

What does it mean to have a cow? Probaby not what you thought when you read the title. This is an organization that I’ve been proud to support.  From the brochure of Heifer Project International:

WHAT: Heifer International is a nonprofit organization working to end world hunger by giving cows, goats and other food- and income-producing livestock to impoverished families around the world. Recipients are trained in animal care and environmentally sound agricultural practices so they can lift themselves out of poverty and become self-reliant. Milk, eggs, wool, meat, draft power and other benefits of animals provide nutrition and money for education, better housing, health care and small business enterprises.

HOW HEIFER WORKS: Heifer partners with community groups that form a development plan with specific goals. Partners learn how to care for animals and grow crops in ways that can be sustained for future generations. Heifer provides expertise in animal health, water quality, gender-equity, the environment and community development.

PASSING ON THE GIFT: Recipients agree to share offspring of their animals with others in need through a requirement Heifer calls “Passing on the Gift.” It multiplies the benefits of every donated animal while making recipients equal partners with Heifer in the fight against hunger and poverty.

You can give a gift in someone’s honor and the site offers several great options for printing cards, card inserts or sending e-cards for letting the person know about the gift given in their name.  We found this to be a great gift for hard-to-shop for grandparents, and it was very well received.

Read their president’s message here and consider giving a gift that keeps on giving and maybe helps to make the world a better place in the process.

For what it’s worth, Heifer Int’l is my hands-down favorite international charity. It is simply wonderful.
